Canibus has a quite the loyal following. We found this out just hours after confirming the interview. Phones blew up and inboxes were clutteredas word spread Rip The Jacker was going to be on the show. Join DS, Big Drew, Dj Phenomejohn, and guest Kontact as we build with Canibus about his enrollement in the military, his past, and new projects such as the Horsemen album.
Tonight is exceptionally crazy. We have the man the myth the legend, one who goes by the name of Canibus here on the show tonight. So, now, without a further delay...
Yo, This DS ?
Speaking.
Drew what up ?
Chillin
We are amped to have you on the show tonight man.
I was just checking on micclub.net, and it said you have interviews lined up for the next couple days. You're definately doing your homework..
Yeah, In between the trainings when I got to do it. When we 're out in the field its difficult, I totally have to push the music stuff aside and focus on the task at hand thats in front of me. But after thats done, i like to put that aside and do something that prolongs my life , you know what i mean ?
No Doubt.
How did you get involved in the military ?
First, I want to tell you , I dont know if it was the best route i could have taken. I'm somebody that goes off of vibes.Thats why a lot of the things I do, even when I'm on the mic things will be spontaneous because thats kind of the way i see things. Life is just controlled chaos its an assortment of things . You know while we are on the phone right now, some where else some of the wildest things you can imagine are goin on. Here we are on the phone talking about Hiphop music. The way I see it, its all controlled chaos. Growin up as a teen ager in my adolescent years, Hiphop music was a hobby of mine.It was positive energy, something whereas I 'd go outside and go pop with my homeboys or get a cardboard box , break it down and be back spinning for five hours after school. That evolved into a love for the five elements of Hiphop you know? You know graffiti art, bboyin, beatboxin itself and rhyming and turntablism too. I started out beatboxing. One day we were battling some kids after PE. Some kids were rhyming and we got into a heated battle and they crushed us. The kid that was rhyming started beat boxing and vice versa. I think that was the moment I said to myself ," I need to start writing rhymes." I didnt think I wanted to become an emcee but if I was gonna get crushed in battles I needed to have some lines or something. It was more about survival. My passion for writing grew, and we took what they did to us and brought it to some kids at another school. We crushed them the same way the other kids had crushed us. I thought I could really do this , you know what I'm sayin?
around what year was this?
This was in Miami in the 80's. Run DMC and the other greats that we know now. Even L, Slick Rick, Doug E. Fresh , Rakim of course. I sat back and watched Public Enemy, Krs one and all that. Looking at them gave me a standard to go by "look how they're getting busy, I gotta get busy like that too." Being I was in Intermediate or Elementary school back then I didnt have the resources I do now, I mean, my rhymes were so basic. I used to look at these guys like "Yo these cats are gods." Big Daddy Kane, the Five percenters they made me go do research on what they were talkin about. It was a good thing, and all in all it was a positive thing. That was all because I went off of a vibe , you know ? My older cousin , he joined the military he was a knuckle head always getting into drama. He was stationed in Korea and sent back boxes of Louis Vaton and Bennetton sweat suits and things that we thought costs an arm and a leg. We didnt know sweat shops in Korea , where that was like bootleg. This was before NY had the bootleg craze , you know what I mean ? In the early 80's, We used to get these boxes of clothes and sport them to school and be like little G's. When he came home, he shipped home a brand new Beamer . He had more direction in his life , seemed more goal orientated , opened up a laundry mat and did well for himself. He made an impression on me at a young age . I said "Damn I can get that by joinin the military?" So when I graduated highschool I was thinkin about joining the military then. I took night courses at a community college and all that but i was thinking "I gotta get into the corporate America some way some how." I decided to go with the music and I moved to Atlanta from Washington, DC . I met The Lost Boys manager at the time. It came together , I did daily itinerary , gettin on the phone. We went to Jersey , grindin it out. I had an intern position at Island records. The Lost Boys were road warriors at the time , if a promoter called up and had a show for 500 dollars , they'd be like "lets do it ." I owe what I've been able to do to The Lost boys. I wanted to do something to challenge myself though, thats why I joined the military.
Now you being enrolled in the military, should we expect a change in your music ?
Of course you'll notice a change. I highly doubt that i'll totally depart from the canibus you know. The Mic Club, Curriculum , and Rip The Jacker, It needed to be done. Its hard hitting, more technical, you know, its different than the music I've put out in the late nineties. I've driven to that really. Now people can expect more , more of a vibe they can relate to. I deal with real life issues each day. I'm not in a fantasy world. I'm not living your average record label artist fantasy. I don't have a 9-5. I've got a 5-9 you know what I'm sayin? and to put all that together and putting that on wax.
I'm in the military myself I've got a quick question , You ever have any other drill sergeants or anyone have you spit, or challenge you?
The drill sergeant I had, he would play Hiphop and he gotten a room right across from mine, and its funny because he was playing this song , and I thought "what is this a nightmare or somethin." He would play this one with Shady saying something about Canibitch or somethin. I was saying "Is this drill sergeant messing with me ? or does he just like the record?" You know once you get past the rank and military courtesy and all that, they are all regular people just like you and I. But it does feel good to talk with you, its like going over seas and speaking to someone who speaks english.
So as far as RTJ is concerned. Did you record that acapella?
Thats something you gotta ask Stoupe . Jedi Mind Tricks. I had to listen to RTJ the first draft, how would I like this if I just was a fan and not an artist. It was different, I expected more grimey. It was good , I took a ride with Stoupe and I liked the results.
Talk to me about the Horsemen project?
Ras Kass situation, god knows what he's doing. He might be readin a book right now, He needs someone like myself and the rest of the members now. But that album is not gonna be in 2005 its gonna be next year. But we want to add other clientele , bring other artists to the table too. I'm feelin Murray, Chino XL, Pacewon,or Young Zee, Rakim. Even a Tame One , these guys i grew up listenin to that I enjoy. Its a lot of red tape to get it done. Its not the easiest thing in the world when you start shoutin names like that. It could get back to them and they'd be with it., or they say I don't want to do it. The benefits are in the artistic value of the product. Doin an album like that could indirectly add on another five to ten years of our type of Hiphop music. A super group like that hasnt come out in a long time. and I want to say I challenge any one of those emcees that have reached acclaim to the point where they are so huge now that they're kind of bored with it. They dont know what they want to do because they can do anything and they've done it all. I challenge those emcees. The Jay-Z's and the Eminem's , The Nas's . Those huge emcees , I challenge them, if they got little record deal situations or whatever make it easier for us : the emcees with the smaller clout but you know the same type of vibe. Like make it easier for us , let us get under your wing or something. The Horsemen will put an album out on Rocafella, I know its gonna be on every shelf in every record store on the globe. I challenge them, you know Shady Records or whatever. You know, picture that , Shady Records presents The Horsemen. I have overcome all the friction , I've had in the past. I'm more mature now as I do this for the sport of it. One day I want to wake up and turn the radio on , and hear Hiphop like Red Alert used to spin. Theres a place for mainstream rap music too, but theres a place for us as well: what people call underground aint really underground. That would be a dream come true for me , if one of the emcees that have already done it , to throw a budget our way. I mean, they coming out with sneakers and all this.. I mean, how crazy would a Horsemen video be? These are things that are tangible and touchable, but not without assistance and help. The fans will see a Horsemen album. whether its Mp3 or whatever. The fans will get a Horsemen album.
