Date: 2nd of March, 1999
While talking over icq, a friend of mine, Crixus, and I discussed sarcastically what it would be like if my site won the award I was nominated for in the 1999 Online Hip-Hop Awards.
Crixus: cool, if you win, maybe canibus will drop his site and ring you up and ask to use yours.
me: hahaha!! oh shit!! Wouldn't that be the dopest shit ever....he calls me up and my mum pics up...then she goes
"Tommy! Your friend Canibus is on the phone"....that would be weird but very cool
Crixus: "Your Friend Canibus"
WOOHOO!!
Man, that'd be awesome
Little did we know, in less than a month, something even better was going to happen to me...

I receive an email from Steven Samuel, of 4CONTROL and the Online Hip-Hop Awards, with a Canibus Central finalist banner for the awards. The last line reads:
"Off the record. Spoke to Canibus this week. Loves your site. Whats your phone number?"
"Holy shit man" I say to myself, amazed at the fact Canibus not only acknowledged my site, but loved it and wanted to get in contact with me!! I couldn't believe it. I ran around my house very quietly, because everyone was still in bed. I was pissed off because I couldn't call any of my friends and tell them my amazing news, (I knew their lazy asses would all be guaranteed to be still asleep) plus everyone in my house was still asleep. I couldn't bring myself to wake them, so I waited for someone to wake up, gradually I told my parents and sister, and my friends. I was amazed and my friends were very jealous.

It was a very dull Monday, I was home from school coz I thought I had appendicitis. In about 10 minutes, I would be leaving for the doctor’s surgery, so I decided to check my mail. There was only one email in my inbox, from Felicia Palmer, Executive Producer of the Online Hip-Hop Awards. The subject bar looked said: Meet Canibus at The Awards.
I decided to read on, as it sounded pretty interesting. This is the first part of the email:
"Hope you are well.
I've got a surprise for you!
I spoke with Canibus who will be performing at The Awards and told him about your website. He says he's seen your site and heard about you as well.
Canibus was really impressed with you and says that he would be willing to fly you down to The 1999 Online Hip-Hop Awards to meet you! We told him you're in Australia and he says he'd still like to have you come down."
"Holy shit man" I thought to myself once again. And, once again, I couldn’t tell anyone, as my friends were at school, my Dad was out working, and my Mum was showering. I just stared at the screen in disbelief, kind of shook for a second, walked into my room and said, very calmly, "it would appear that I am the man." The appendicitis pains restricted me from any vigorous physical celebration I might have otherwise taken part in.
Then my Mum came out of her bathroom, telling me to get ready to go down to the surgery. I told her to look at the screen. She couldn’t believe it. We discussed it on the way to the surgery, and called my Dad. He said:
"Bloody bewdy mate, isn’t that fantastic? Better get you down to the Pharmacy and get some passports then mate-eee"
I eventually got to the doctor, who said my stomach pains were a combination of straining my stomach muscles and drinking too much Coca-Cola.
Then, after some incredibly hard work from my Mum, Dad, and Felicia Palmer, I ended up on a plane leaving Melbourne for Los Angeles, via Auckland, New Zealand. After that 14 or so hours travelling, I boarded a five-hour flight for New York.
After 38 very long hours, Saturday the 27th of March finally ended.
For the next few days, I did all the basic tourist stuff, the highlights being Staten Island, just because, and the view from the Empire State is dope, you can’t front on that. Plus this revolving restaurant in times square, another hot view. Definitely though, the pre-Canibus highlight was the Online Hip-Hop Awards Benefit Concert. While it did take me aaages to get in, waiting outside was aight, I talked to two very cool guys from Loud Records, Bee and Chris. Very nice guys, and Bee later hooked me up with a guy named Miguel Burke from The Source, so keep an eye out in the July issue, there may be a small mention of Mr. Tommy Carson!
The awards show was some really ill shit. The first act I saw was this very skilled young white kid, don’t remember his name, Def Spot or something. He was dope. Then there was more underground, up-and-comin’ cats, before I finally saw my man Canibus come out with none other than Killah Priest, and the legendary Grandmaster Flash. Their spot was hot. Canibus actually freestyled! I mean he actually kicked something off his head! That’s seriously the first time I’ve seen a big-name emcee kick a true freestyle. Other dope acts included Rubberoom, Jeru, Mountain Brothers, and surprisingly Naughty By Nature ripped shit up! They were incredibly dope live. I didn’t win the award I was nominated for though, but Rebirth Magazine did win, and that’s good coz they deserved it more than me and I love that site, so mad props to them.
Anyway, the real shit finally went down on Thursday, April 1. Canibus called me early in the morning and invited me to hook up with him in the studio that night while he filmed the video for the super-hot, dope, ill track "100 Bars".
I hooked up with Canibus at about 8:20PM, at Black Pearl Studios, Manhattan. Canibus walked in the door, and it was so ill to just see Canibus, the illest lyricist in America, walk in the door of a room I was in. I shook his hand and all that, said hi etc..then Canibus had to make some conference call or something, so he disappeared for about twenty minutes. When he came out, Canibus told me to come down to visit New York DJ, Doo-Wop, in a studio a few blocks away. I’m not really too sure of why we went there, something to do with putting 100 Bars on Doo-Wop’s next tape or something, but it was cool to just be there, talkin to Canibus about whatever. So then we got back, and Canibus started filming the video for 100 Bars.
Between takes, Canibus and I talked about this and that, nothing too thought provoking, just shit like "how long was your flight?", "what’s hip-hop like in Australia?"…. He kept shooting the video, and I left after about two hours, coz you can only take listening to that one same song for so long. I went out and started talking to a few of Canibus’s homies. I spoke with one very cool guy named Dupree, who gave me about 11 mixtapes which I bump very regularly in my system, Dupree, if you’re reading this, that Best Of Queensbridge tape is hot!!. I was also talking to Pete, another cool guy, who is Canibus’s manager. Now if you ever want to talk about ANYTHING to someone, you talk to this guy. He knows a lot of shit! He was even talking to me about glycolysis at one stage. I also spoke with Canibus's bodyguard. Now he’s a big man, 6"10, 325 pounds or something!! Daaaaamn!!
Later, I went back into the studio and Canibus and I talked for a while. It was like a dream. I got Canibus to sign all the damn Can-I-Bus CD Covers my friends gave me, then we talked for a bit longer, and I interviewed him for this project I'm doing at school. I'm making this hip-hop documentary, and part of the requirements is that you interview an expert. Canibus is a pretty impressive expert to interview!
Then Canibus and I talked a bit longer, and we discussed future plans for Canibus Central, Da Horsemen, who’s producing The C-Quel, breakdancing, kangaroos…..everything. I might have a full interview with Canibus up on my website sometime soon, plus tracks from the C-Quel will be sent to me in advance in MP3 format too, so keep checkin me out here at Canibus Central!! J
I was about to leave, and before I did Canibus gave me one of those ill Canibus shirts (that I rock everyday with maximum pride). I couldn't believe what I had just done. I fulfilled a dream. Not many people can say that they've done that, and I already can at age 16!! It's amazing and I think about it every day, whenever I feel like I'm having bad luck. It never ceases to put a smile on my face. So that's it really.
Eternal thanx to my parents, OHHA and SOHH for the help throughout the whole ordeal. It was such a roller-coaster experience, mad highs and crazy lows (it looked like I was never gonna go at a few stages), but it all happened in the end, and I really am one of the luckiest people on the planet.
Peace
