SOHH Where Have You Been?: Canibus
source: SOHH.com (2005)
Back to overview  »

Trees. Pot. Weed. Reefer. Chronic. Budd. Ganja. Whichever name you choose for it, Germaine Williams, also known as Canibus, has without a doubt created his own definition of the word. Well known for his articulate rhymes, candid lyricism, thought provoking metaphors, oh, and lets not forget the infamous beef battle with LL Cool J in 1998 that sparked his most recognized single "Second Round K.O." But since his Universal releases, CAN-I-BUS and 2000 B.C., Canibus has not been a prominent name in Hip-Hop. In speaking to the rap intellect we just had to ask, SOHH Where have you been?

After Canibus' major label releases left much to be desired by Hip-Hop fans and his 2001 release C True Hollywood Story was barely talked about, he enlisted in the military in 2002. Some speculate that his enlistment had to do with the effect that September 11, 2001 had on him. But Canibus says otherwise.

"I enlisted because I wanted to get away from the music," said the MC. "I wanted to do something that gave me a separate definition from what I had done all through my teens and twenties. I was 28 when I enlisted."

He graduated from Ft.Knox in May of 2003 and became a reconnaissance specialist in the United States Army. Ironically, he was discharged a year later after he was caught smoking...his namesake.

But Canibus didn't stray far from the mic even while enlisted. Critics and fans alike have argued that some of his best work can be heard in the indie releases he put out during those two years.

Released in 2002 under his Mic Club Music label, Mic Club: The Curriculum was his fourth release and has been praised for both lyrics and beats. This was also the second installment in a trilogy of alter egos, the first installment was C True Hollywood Story with Canibus as Germaine Williams. With the second it was Canibus as Canibus and the third, released in 2003, with Canibus as Rip the Jacker.

Canibus explained the alter-egos to SOHH.com, "Germaine created Canibus and Canibus had to deal with things in the industry that he had no idea existed. I didn't know that the competition was unfair, that the competitive nature of the music was cut-throat. Then when I had the chance to experience that, Canibus had to create another level. Rip the Jacker is like a foot side of Jack the Ripper."

With this third installment, Canibus' military obligations kept him away from the studio so he recorded his vocals prior to any production. Producer Stoupe the Enemy of Mankind, better known for his work as a member of Jedi Mind Tricks, received the acapellas and brought the rest of the album together, producing every track. Canibus didn't even get to hear his album until he received the final copy.

"In comparison to the guys I was coming up with, class of 98', like Kurupt, DMX, Big Pun, Cam'ron, Noreaga, I think that their progression was natural, mine, from my perspective, seemed to be unnatural," Canibus admitted. "Nothing went smoothly at all. If I came out and did a record that was more introspective about my life like the one with my mom on "I Honor You' [from CAN-I-BUS], they bomb. [But] if I come out and talk shit on the mic and say I'm the best and ya'll can't fuck with me, you never could, never will, they get mad at me. It makes me feel like, 'Damn, my peers went on to make movies, write books and all kinds of shit, and I got off to a fast start and then got put in purgatory for years.' And sometimes I still feel like I'm there because I never played catch up. So, I just decided to go do my own thing. And not even care about playing catch up. That's where I'm at."

Fast-forward to present day, where the state of Hip-Hop is in redesign with emcees shying away from the battles and making money together instead.

"I got thrown for a loop when I seen that Jay-Z had signed Nas - they did a show together and they patched things up," said Canibus. "I sorta felt like damn I've been reaching out to L[L Cool J] for like four years. When I reached out to him if he would have reached back we could have been the first ones to make things right. I love it that Jay-Z and Nas set aside their differences and looked at the bigger picture, which is what I was trying to do.

"I don't care about continuing a feud anymore because its over, all I was trying to do was stand my ground in '98," he added. "I was just trying to rhyme. I wasn't trying to be known as someone that was disrespecting a veteran and the music that I had grown up listening to."

Canibus recently released his sixth album, Hip Hop For Sale, on November 22. Produced entirely by Nottz (G-Unit, Busta Rhymes and The Notorious B.I.G.), the album is distributed through a partnership between Babygrande and Koch Records.

"Working with Nottz was an honor," said the emcee. "His dexterity working with drums and beats is unsurpassed."

Also part of a duo known as Cloak & Dagga, Canibus and Phoenix Orion released their debut album, Def Con Zero, on October 25. The album featured appearances from Kool G Rap, K-Solo and Free, former co-host of BET's 106 & Park. He also released a mixtape entitled Mic Club Masters, Vol.1 earlier this year.

"Nowadays, people have the option of getting into so many different things," said Canibus. "Day after day everybody suffers from ADD [Attention Deficit Disorder] because of it. It separates people from a singular eye and when I say that I mean having one opinion, one point of view, one perspective, and one idea of resolve. When you start to look at things that way you become more focused and you definitely accomplish what you set out to do."
