Canibus vs. LL Cool J
source: Raptism.com (1999)
Back to overview  »

It was a case of the old versus the new when veteran LL Cool J squared off against the newcomer Canibus in this lyrical battle. LL has had great success over the years with albums such as "Phenomenon" and six others which have gone platinum. He has been in the rap game for well over 10 years and the question was will he be able to overcome Canibus. Canibus was the new upcoming MC, and had been praised at the time by everyone from Busta Rhymes to the great Funkmaster Flex. He had collaborated with Wyclef, The Firm, Lost Boyz and even LL himself - so why the beef?

When the two worked on the song "4,3,2,1" with DMX, Method Man and Redman from LL's "Phenomenon" album, one of Canibus' lines were: "Yo Meth, where the Gods at? Red, where the squads at? L, is that a mic on your arm? Let me borrow that". Referring to the microphone tattoo on LL's arm. Apparently LL took offence to this and re-wrote his verse for the song as a diss towards Canibus. LL then asked Canibus to take out the offensive line so that he could put his old verse back in. Canibus obliged and the line was taken out of the song. However, LL still released the song with the diss at Canibus and did not include Canibus' video clip footage until 2 - 3 months after the video was originally released.

Canibus was rightly pissed at LL for doing this to him so he released "2nd Round Knockout" featuring Mike Tyson. Canibus disses LL with lines like "You studied my rhyme/ Then you laid your vocals after mine/ That's a bitch move… Watch me rip that tat from your arm/ Kick you in the groin/ Stick you for your Vanguard Award/ In front of your mom, your first, second and third born/ Make your wife get on the horn, call minister Farrakhan/ So he can pursuade me to squash it/ I say naw he started it/ He forgot whata hardcore artist is".

LL's reply to this was "Can-I-Bus (The Ripper Strikes Back)". The track contained disses at Canibus, Wyclef and MIKE TYSON! (Possibly not the smartest move by LL considering Tyson's profession). Lines from the song include "You're a weak nigga, you bout to die in your sleep/ The overlord of rap will never meet defeat… I'm everything you want to be - handsome, young plus legendary/ talk about Farrakhan? Nigga you gotta call Jesse Jackson/ For some Affirmative action… Forty nine pounds and tryin to be a mobster/ Run around town with the Bob Marley imposter/ Ask Canibus, he ain't understandin this/ Cause ninty nine percent of his fans don't exist!… Heard that convicted rapist on the record too/ Fresh out of Jail, nigga teeth still black and blue/ Tell me bout the things ear biter taught you/ How to bust a nut or two?".

LL has since "strayed" from the rap scene, saying that he had retired to persue an acting career. Canibus' debut album did not live up to the hype and expectation of many. Wyclef's production was blamed. The issue has not been resolved and who knows if either will continue the beef.
